Dear parents, breastfeeding is a warm conversation between you and your baby. We know the journey can have challenges, and that is normal. This guide is a message of support for you.
Part One: The Golden Start (the first hour)
1. Skin-to-skin contact: Ask for your baby to be placed on your chest right after birth. This regulates their temperature and stimulates milk production.
2. The perfect latch: The key to comfortable breastfeeding.
- Baby’s mouth is open wide (like a yawn).
- The lips are turned outward.
- Most of the dark areola is inside the mouth.
- You feel no pain: If it hurts, break the latch and try again.
Part Two: Common Challenges and Solutions
1. Sore and cracked nipples:
The main cause is a poor latch. Correct the position, and use a few drops of your own milk or pure lanolin cream to moisturize after feeding.
2. “I feel my milk isn’t enough”:
This is a common worry. Signs of a full baby: 5–6 wet diapers, weight gain, and a calm baby after feeding.
To increase milk: Breastfeed often (8–12 times), make sure the breast is emptied, and drink water.
3. Breast engorgement:
It happens on day 3–4. The solution: warm compresses before feeding, frequent feeding, and cold compresses afterward to reduce pain.
Part Three: Pumping and Storage (for working mothers)
You can start after 4–6 weeks.
Storage rules (4-4-4):
- 4 hours: at room temperature.
- 4 days: in the refrigerator (at the back).
- 6 months: in the freezer.
Do not use the microwave to warm milk.
Part Four: You Are Not Alone
Ask for help from a lactation consultant or your family. Eat well (eat when hungry and drink when thirsty). Every drop of milk is a great achievement.
