Dear parents, your baby’s digestive system is a whole new world, and it is normal for it to go through some disturbances. This guide decodes your baby’s tummy for you.

Part One: Colic and Gas (the puzzle of evening crying)

Colic: Crying for more than 3 hours, 3 days a week, for 3 weeks.

Ways to soothe:

  • Tiger-in-the-tree hold: Carry your baby on your forearm, face down.
  • Bicycle exercises: Gently move their legs.
  • Tummy massage: Clockwise circular motions.
  • Burping and white noise.

Part Two: Reflux (spit-up)

Normal: Milk comes up without pain, with good weight gain.

Silent reflux: The baby swallows acidic milk, causing pain and arching of the back.

The solution: Feed in an upright position, keep your baby upright for 20 minutes after feeding, and give smaller feeds.

Part Three: Diarrhea and Constipation

1. Diarrhea:

Watery, frequent stools. The danger: Dehydration (fewer diapers, dry mouth). The solution: Intensive fluids and consulting the doctor.

2. Constipation:

Not fewer bowel movements, but hard and painful stools. The solution (after 6 months): Fiber (prunes, pears) and water.

Part Four: Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA)

The immune system attacks milk.

Symptoms: Vomiting, blood in the stool, eczema, or wheezing.

Treatment: An elimination diet for the mother (when breastfeeding) or an extensively hydrolyzed formula (when formula-feeding), under medical supervision.
